Brief city highlights: According to legend, Rome was founded by Romulus, the brother of Remus. The twins were fathered by Mars-the god of war-and born to a Latin Princess. Rome, once a village, became the capital of an empire in a few centuries and, with the Punic Wars, the undisputed ruler of the Mediterranean Sea.

The modern city of Rome is composed of 22 districts, covering an area of nearly 10 square miles. The Tiber makes two distinct bends within Rome, below Ponte Cavour, one of the city's major bridges, and again at the history-rich island of Tiberina. One of Europe's most popular destinations, it is home to a wealth of historical, cultural, and educational attractions. This is not to mention the recreational, culinary, and romantic aspects (and the temperate climate) that attract an average 7-10 million tourists to the city every year!

Ask someone about their trip to Rome and they will most likely tell you about how they left a piece of their heart there; whether it was at the ancient ruins of the Colosseum, under the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, or at a small restaurant in Trastevere.

Take advantage of guided visits to its museums, monuments, and a variety of other historical sites, some of the most famous being the Colosseum, Catacombs, and the Roman Forum. And art students will be in Heaven. They can visit the Sistine Chapel to see the breathtaking work of Michelangelo or the city's rich museums to view the masterpieces of numerous Renaissance and Baroque masters.
