London at a glance

With a population of seven and a half million plus, London is Europe's largest city, spreading across an area of 650 square miles from its core on the River Thames

Ethnically, it's also Europe's most diverse metropolis: around two hundred languages are spoken within its confines, and more than thirty percent of the population is made up of first, second and third-generation immigrants

Few cities dominate the national horizon as completely. It is here that the country's news and money are made, it's where the central government resides and, as far as its inhabitants are concerned, provincial life begins beyond the circuit of the city's orbital motorway

Even though the city is so huge, you don't have to cover an awful lot of ground to see some of it's most famous sights. London Eye, Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace, 10 Downing Street - these are all within walking distance of each other

A good way to see some many of the city's best-known landmarks, along with the city's numerous bridges, is from the water. Boats cruise up and down the River Thames all day long and are a good way to see a lot without having to put in too much effort!

London's museums and galleries - the National British Museum, the Tate, and scores of others - are among the finest in the world

If the weather ever begins to turn on you, they are the best place to go. But if, on the other hand, you are lucky with the weather, go to one of the famous city centre parks such as Hyde Park for a break from the hustle and bustle of it all
